What 40 Years in the Garment Industry Taught Me

What 40 Years in the Garment Industry Taught Me

Hello, and welcome to Pattern, Fit & Production.

My name is James Park, and I have spent more than 40 years working in the garment industry. Throughout my career, I have been involved in pattern making, sample development, fit analysis, sewing, sample room management, and production management.

I have worked with many factories, brands, technical designers, and production teams across different countries. During those years, I have seen thousands of garments, solved countless fitting issues, and learned lessons that cannot be found in textbooks.

So why am I starting this blog now?

The answer is simple.

Over the years, I realized that many technical problems in garment development are repeated again and again. Garments fall to the back, sleeves twist, necklines gape, armholes pull, and samples fail when they move into production. While these problems may look different, their root causes are often the same.

Most of what I know was not learned in a classroom. It was learned through experience, mistakes, failures, and continuous problem-solving on the factory floor and in the sample room.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is this:

A good garment is not created by a good pattern alone.

A successful garment requires the right balance between pattern, fit, sewing, fabric, and production. When one part fails, the entire garment can fail.

Many people focus only on the final appearance of a garment. However, behind every successful product are hundreds of technical decisions made during development. Understanding those decisions is what separates experience from theory.

Through this blog, I would like to share practical knowledge gained from four decades in the industry. My goal is not to teach complicated theories but to provide real-world solutions that can help apparel professionals improve product quality and solve technical challenges.

In the coming articles, I will discuss topics such as:

  • Pattern Development

  • Fit Analysis

  • Sample Room Management

  • Sewing Technology

  • Production Management

  • Common Garment Problems and Their Solutions

Whether you are a pattern maker, technical designer, sample room manager, production manager, or simply someone interested in garment manufacturing, I hope you will find value in the experiences and lessons shared here.

Thank you for visiting.

Welcome to Pattern, Fit & Production.
